ECLIPSE VIEWING PROSPECTS |
| |
|
By Meteorologist
Jay Anderson
Our eclipse-viewing site offers the best prospects on the
African continent. The sun is high in the sky - nearly 45° - and
the early morning hour of the shadow passage comes at a time of
day when cloud and precipitation is typically at a minimum.
Satellite measurements taken over the past 20 years show a
distinct minimum in cloudiness in the area of our observing site -
one of the reasons that we’ve chosen this location. The
temperature is warm during the day, in spite of our 1200-meter
altitude, with daytime highs near 90°F (32°C) and lows near 69°F
(20°C), and moderate daytime humidities that fall to comfortable
levels at night. Winds are light and strongly favor the easterly
direction as a consequence of the trade wind circulation over
northern South Africa.

WEATHER & HEALTH |
| |
|
December is summer in South Africa. Daytime
highs average in the upper 80-90°s and nights in the 50-60°s.
While exposure to malaria is limited, it is strongly recommended
that malaria medication be discussed with your physician and all
vaccinations be up to date. For up to date health information
visit the Centers for Disease Control <www.cdc.gov/travel/#Geographic>.
Although this is not a strenuous trip, travelers need to be
able to climb into and out of safari vehicles for 3-4 hour game
drives along sometimes dusty, bumpy terrain.
