  Day 8 Sat, April 1                                                                                        B/L/D
Edfu / Kom Ombo / Aswan

This morning we値l travel by horse-drawn buggies to visit the almost perfectly preserved Temple of Horus. The ever-dark rooms are unchanged since ancient times, and some of the cartouches for the royal name are empty, indicating how swiftly the throne could change hands. Returning to our ship, we値l enjoy lunch and cruise onward to the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile-headed god, Sobek, and the falcon-headed god, Haroeris. This picturesque temple on a hill overlooking the Nile is divided symmetrically, with the northern side honoring Sobek and the souther side honoring Haroeris. Of special interest here are the surgical instruments depicted in the reliefs on the temple walls. Late this afternoon the MS Salacia will arrive in the bustling town of Aswan.

Day 9 Sun, April 2                                                                                      B/L/D
Aswan

Today we値l visit a modern marvel, the Aswan High Dam. Completed in 1971, the dam created Lake Nasser and provides about half of Egypt痴 electric power. We will also explore the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Between 1972 and 1980, this massive complex was disassembled and moved to higher ground to save it from being submerged by Lake Nasser. The positioning of the buildings and landscaping has been carefully recreated to accurately depict the original ancient site.
Not far from Aswan, we値l stop at an ancient granite quarry to see an unfinished obelisk that would have been Egypt痴 tallest at 138 feet had it not cracked during the carving process. At the quarry it値l become clear just how stone was extracted in ancient times. This afternoon we値l cruise among the granite islands of the Nile on feluccas, the traditional sailboats of the great river, ending at the steps leading from the riverbank up to the legendary Old Cataract Hotel, where we shall take afternoon tea as the Sun dips to the horizon. We値l then return to the ship for dinner and our last night onboard.

Aswan / Abu Simbel / Cairo

Enjoy a morning at leisure aboard the MS Salacia or join our sunrise flight for an optional visit to famous Abu Simbel (currently $225 per person). Here we値l explore the rock-hewn temples of Rameses II and his wife Nefertari, which were moved 200 feet above their former site, now submerged by Lake Nasser. The temples are currently housed in an artificial mountain to recreate their original setting. You can go behind the scenes and see how this was engineered. Advance reservations are required; contact TravelQuest for details. This afternoon, we値l fly to Cairo for our last evening in Egypt and a wonderful farewell dinner.
