Edfu / Kom Ombo |
|
| |
This
morning we’ll travel by horse-drawn buggies through Edfu to visit the
almost perfectly preserved Temple of Horus. The ever-dark rooms are
unchanged since ancient times, and some of the cartouches for the royal
name are empty, indicating how swiftly the throne could change hands.
Returning to our ship, we’ll
enjoy lunch and a cruise onward to the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to
the crocodile-headed god, Sobek, and the falcon-headed god, Haroeris. This
picturesque temple on a hill overlooking the Nile is divided
symmetrically, with the northern side honoring Sobek and the southern side
honoring Haroeris. Of special interest here are the surgical instruments
depicted in the reliefs on the temple walls. (Our
arrival time in Kom Ombo, will determine if we visit the site this
afternoon or early March 26). |

Kom Ombo / Aswan / Optional Abu Simbel |
|
| |
After lunch and arrival in the bustling town
of Aswan, we’ll visit the Temple of Philae,
dedicated to the goddess Isis.
Between 1972 and 1980, this massive complex was disassembled and moved to
higher ground to save it from being submerged by Lake Nasser. The
positioning of the buildings and landscaping has been carefully recreated
to accurately depict the original ancient site.
Not far from Aswan, we’ll
stop at an ancient granite quarry to see an unfinished obelisk that would
have been Egypt’s tallest at 138 feet had it not cracked during the
carving process. At the quarry it’ll become clear just how stone was
extracted in ancient times. This afternoon we’ll cruise among the granite
islands of the Nile on feluccas, the traditional sailboats of the great
river, ending at the steps leading from the riverbank up to the legendary
Old Cataract Hotel, where we shall take afternoon tea as the Sun dips to
the horizon. We’ll then return to the ship for dinner and our last night
onboard. |

Optional Abu Simbel / Egyptian Museum |
|
|
|
Join our sunrise flight for an optional
visit to famous Abu Simbel (currently $225 per person). Here we’ll
explore the rock-hewn temples of Rameses II and his wife Nefertari,
which were moved 200 feet above their former site, now submerged by
Lake Nasser. The temples are currently housed in an artificial
mountain to recreate their original setting. Advance reservations are
required; contact TravelQuest for details. For those not going to Abu
Simbel, after breakfast we’ll transfer to Aswan Airport for our flight
to Cairo.
Upon our return to Cairo
everyone will transfer to the incredible Egyptian Antiquities Museum,
where we will view treasures spanning 5,000 years — from Egypt’s
prehistory to the Greco-Roman period. You’ll have extra time at the
museum’s prized collection from King Tutankhamen’s tomb.
Join us this
evening for dinner and a discussion about tomorrow’s journey through
the desert to Mersa Matrouh. |

El Alamein WWII Museum and Cemetery / Matrouh |
|
| |
After breakfast, we’ll board our private motorcoach and drive
northwest across the desert toward El Alamein, the site of the great World
War II battle where German General Rommel and his Afrika Korps were routed
by the British General Montgomery, thus securing Cairo and the vital Suez
Canal for the Allied forces. We’ll stop at El Alamein to visit the war
museum and the Commonwealth War Cemetery. Continuing on to Mersa Matrouh,
we’ll have brief glimpses of the sea, as the highway parallels the
Mediterranean coastline. In the late afternoon we will arrive in Mersa
Matrouh and our hotel with its own private beach. Join us this evening for
a pre-eclipse briefing followed by a buffet dinner. |
