Day 1  Sun, March 19, 2006                                                                  No Meals
Arrive Cairo, Egypt

Arrive at Cairo International Airport (CAI) according to your own air schedule, or use TravelQuest’s special group air program, flying nonstop from New York on EgyptAir. You might wish to arrive a day or two early to recover from the long flight and explore Cairo on your own.

Upon arrival, you’ll be met by our representative, who will assist you through baggage claim, immigration, customs, and then transfer you to our hotel in Cairo, which is just a 4-minute walk

from the famous the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. The rest of the day is yours to relax at the hotel, explore Cairo on foot, or to visit the museum!
  Overnight: Nile Hilton, Cairo

  Day 2  Mon, March 20                                                                              B/L/D
Cairo / Aswan

Join our sunrise flight for an optional visit to famous Abu Simbel (currently $225 per person). Here we’ll explore the rock-hewn temples of Rameses II and his wife Nefertari, which were moved 200 feet above their former site, now submerged by Lake Nasser. The temples are currently housed in an artificial mountain to recreate their original setting. Advance reservations are required; contact TravelQuest for details. For those not going to Abu Simbel, after breakfast we’ll transfer to Cairo Airport for our flight to Aswan.
Upon arrival, we’ll visit an ancient granite quarry to see an unfinished obelisk that would have been Egypt’s tallest at 138 feet had it not cracked during the extraction process. At the quarry it will become clear just how stone was extracted in ancient times. Next, we’ll visit the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Between 1972 and 1980, this massive complex was disassembled and moved to higher ground to save it from being submerged. The positioning of the buildings and

landscaping has been carefully recreated to accurately depict the original ancient site.
This afternoon, we’ll embark on the elegant MS Salacia for lunch. This is one of the few vessels cruising the Nile that meets US Bureau of Shipping safety standards. Later, we’ll cruise among the granite islands of the Nile on ’feluccas’, the traditional sailboat of the great river. Join us for a welcome dinner aboard ship.

Overnight: MS Salacia (3 nights)

  Day 3  Tue, March 21                                                                             B/L/D
Aswan / Kom Ombo / Edfu

This morning we begin our Nile cruise to the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile-headed god, Sobek, and the falcon-headed god, Haroeris. This picturesque temple on a hill overlooking the Nile is divided symmetrically, with the northern side honoring Sobek and the southern side honoring Haroeris. Of special interest here are the surgical instruments depicted in the reliefs on the temple walls.
Continuing our cruise, after lunch we’ll arrive in Edfu, where we’ll travel by horse-drawn buggies through the town to visit the almost perfectly preserved Temple of Horus. The ever-dark rooms are unchanged since ancient times, and some of the cartouches for the royal name are empty, indicating how swiftly the throne could change hands.

Day 4  Wed, March 22                                                                           B/L/D
Luxor Temple

We’ll continue our cruise this morning to Luxor to visit the magnificent Temple of Luxor. Much smaller than Karnak Temple, Luxor is nevertheless well preserved, built by Amenophis lll for Amun, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. There’s a magical atmosphere here that provides a perfect introduction to the temples of Upper Egypt.
