CAVES, CORKS, CUISINE, AND AN ANNULAR ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

   Spanish Memories by Paul Deans

Sept. 25: Welcome to Spain. Today is the “official” start of the tour, but many of us have arrived early. Most of our 21 participants are from the United States, but we also have five Canadians and a dual-citizenship Australian/Swiss couple. Many of us gathered last night at our

hotel in Madrid to meet each other and our tour leader — Josu Camacho, the general manager of Ole Spain tours.

This morning we meet our driver, Mariano, as we climb aboard our bus. We pick up two more members of our contingent at the airport and head north. First stop: Burgos. Here we’re introduced to what will become our standard two-hour lunch (and dinner, for that matter). The wine flows endlessly and plate after plate of delicious food appears; we quickly lose track of the number of courses!

After the meal we explore the magnificent Burgos Cathedral. Construction began in 1221 and required 300 years to complete. It's an amazing church with multiple spires, great arches and detailed carvings everywhere. Even today the cathedral dominates Burgos; imagine 500 years ago when nothing in the town was taller than two stories.

Following a short tour of the old town of Burgos we’re on our way to Logroño. We arrive about 8:30 pm: late by North American standards, but early for dinner in Spain. To get to the restaurant, we plunge through the crowds celebrating the end of summer. Two hours later, as we walk to our hotel, we note that the crowds have yet to thin out.
