On a personal note, as many times as I've vowed that someday I'm going to
only watch an eclipse, my resolve always weakens and I end up planning
some type of photography. Last December was no exception, but I did tailor
my plans to use the automation available with today's digital cameras.
I'll skip the details, but other than pressing a cable release at the
beginning of totality, the only things I had to do during the fleeting
moments of darkness were change one camera setting at mideclipse and press
the cable release again. When totality began I hit the button on an old
mechanical stopwatch with a large sweep hand, since I knew it would be
easy to see in the low light of the eclipse. While this proved a fine way
to determine the midpoint of totality, I was so distracted thinking about
having to look at the stopwatch that it detracted from my enjoyment of
watching the eclipse itself. You can be sure that the next time I witness
a short eclipse I'll not plan any "must do" activity during totality. |

With everyone still "pumped" from the spectacular eclipse, our dinner at
the Prairie Hotel was especially enjoyable. The next morning we headed
back to Adelaide, where we toured the city and visited the South Australia
Museum, noted for its extensive exhibits of aboriginal art and culture.
Adelaide was also the base for our one-day trip to nearby Kangaroo Island,
where we enjoyed sea lions, koalas, and the island's namesake in their
natural settings, not to mention some pretty spectacular scenery.
Our last stop before heading home was Melbourne, where we spent several
days exploring the city and the surrounding countryside. It was a great
place to unwind from our whirlwind days crisscrossing the Land Down Under.
